Google Calendar Notifications on Mac: Why They Don’t Show Up and How to Fix Them
Google Calendar has no app for the Mac. Its reminders come either from your browser or, if you added your Google account to macOS, from the Apple Calendar app. Both routes have settings that can silently switch reminders off. Here is how to check them, in order.
1. Notifications from the browser
If you use Google Calendar at calendar.google.com, reminders are browser notifications.
- Google Calendar setting: In Google Calendar, open Settings → Notification settings and set notifications to “Desktop notifications”.
- Site permission: In your browser, allow notifications for calendar.google.com (in Chrome: click the icon left of the address, then Site settings → Notifications → Allow).
- macOS permission: Open System Settings → Notifications, select your browser (for example Google Chrome) and turn on “Allow notifications”. Choose “Alerts” instead of “Banners” if you want them to stay on screen.
- Tab must be open: Browser notifications only arrive while a Google Calendar tab is open, and in some browsers only while the browser is running.
2. Notifications from the Apple Calendar app
If you added Google under System Settings → Internet Accounts, the macOS Calendar app shows your Google events and can alert you.
- Check System Settings → Notifications → Calendar and allow notifications.
- Open an event in Calendar and check that it has an alert. Default alerts are set in Calendar → Settings → Alerts, per account.
- If events are missing entirely, open Calendar → Settings → Accounts and check that the Google account is enabled and refreshing.
3. Focus and Do Not Disturb
A Focus mode (Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep) silences notifications from apps that aren’t on its allowed list. Open System Settings → Focus and add your browser or Calendar to the allowed apps, or check whether a Focus is switched on automatically during your working hours.
4. The real problem: notifications are easy to miss
Even when everything is set up correctly, a macOS notification is a small banner in the corner. If you’re in a full-screen app, presenting or simply concentrating, you swipe it away or never see it.
That’s why we built Final Call. It reads your Google Calendar through the macOS Calendar app (no Google login, no open tab) and, just before each meeting, takes over the whole screen with a countdown, the meeting title and a Join button for Google Meet, Zoom, Teams and other services. Focus modes don’t hide it. More: Google Meet reminder for Mac.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Google Calendar notifications not show up on my Mac?
Usually one of three reasons: notifications are not set to “Desktop notifications” in Google Calendar, the browser is not allowed to send notifications in macOS System Settings, or a Focus mode is silencing them.
Is there a Google Calendar app for Mac?
No. You can use Google Calendar in the browser or add your Google account to the macOS Calendar app under System Settings → Internet Accounts.
Do Google Calendar reminders work when the browser is closed?
No. Browser notifications need a running browser, and usually an open Google Calendar tab. Reminders through the Apple Calendar app or Final Call work without a browser.
How can I make Google Calendar reminders impossible to miss?
Use an app that shows a full-screen reminder instead of a banner. Final Call does that for every meeting in your Google Calendar.
