Notch App for Mac: Your Next Meeting, Right in the Notch

Final Call ·

The notch on your MacBook is the one spot at the top of the screen you look past a hundred times a day. Since version 1.5, Final Call puts it to work: it shows how long until your next meeting, and when you move the pointer over it, it opens up with your whole day and a Join button.

What the notch shows

Compact view. On the left, the icon of the video app; on the right, the time: “in 12 min” before your next meeting. While a meeting is running, you see how much time is left, with a thin green progress bar.

Expanded view. Move the pointer over the notch and it grows downward, in the style of the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. At the top: the current or next meeting with title, time, video app and a Join button. Below: up to five more meetings of the day. At the bottom: Settings, Mute today and Quit.

Only when it matters. The notch display appears only when a meeting is still ahead today or running. On a free afternoon it stays out of sight.

Macs without a notch and external displays

The notch exists on the MacBook Air (M2 and later) and the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 and later). On every other Mac, and on external monitors, Final Call draws a notch of its own in the middle of the menu bar. If it covers menu bar icons, you can move it sideways with a slider in the settings. You also choose where it appears: on all screens, only on the main screen, or on one specific display.

How to turn it on

The notch display is off by default. Open Final Call from the menu bar, go to Settings → Menu Bar & Notch and switch on “Show meetings in the notch”. That’s it. Your full-screen reminder before each meeting stays exactly as it is, the notch is an extra layer on top.

Why the notch is a good place for meetings

The menu bar on a MacBook is crowded. A countdown next to Wi-Fi, battery and a dozen other icons is easy to overlook, and when an app runs in full screen, the menu bar disappears completely. The notch sits in the middle, right in your line of sight when you look up from a document. A short “in 5 min” there is hard to miss, and one hover gets you into the call.

For the moment you really can’t afford to miss, Final Call still takes over the whole screen just before the meeting starts, with a countdown, an optional camera and microphone check, and one-click join. See all features.

Frequently asked questions

Which Macs have a notch?

The MacBook Air with M2 chip or later and the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 onward. On all other Macs and on external displays, Final Call shows a simulated notch in the menu bar.

Does the notch app slow down my Mac?

No. The notch view only updates when your meetings change or time passes, and it reads your calendar locally on your Mac.

Can I join a meeting from the notch?

Yes. Hover over the notch and click Join next to the current or next meeting. Final Call opens the link in the right app, for example Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

What if the notch covers icons in my menu bar?

On Macs without a hardware notch you can move the simulated notch sideways in Settings → Menu Bar & Notch. On a MacBook with a hardware notch, Final Call uses the real notch, so nothing extra covers your menu bar.

Do I need the notch display to get reminders?

No. It is optional. The full-screen reminder before every meeting works with or without it.
